Banks
Scale, trust and the weight of legacy.
The Big Four still anchor an estimated AUD $347 billion commercial banking market, projected to grow at roughly 4% CAGR through 2035.
Higher rates from 2022 widened net interest margins, but the expiry of cheap term funding and an intensely competitive mortgage market have since compressed profitability and forced the majors to justify their scale through service quality and innovation.
Talent demand inside the majors is sharpest in lending, compliance and technology; the functions tied most directly to growth, regulatory expectation and digital resilience.
Non-banks
Faster, flatter, fighting for share.
Non-bank lending has matured from fringe alternative to systemically important. Around 522 businesses now operate in the space.
Growth is driven by the Big Four's retreat from complex segments: self-employed borrowers, SMEs, investors using trust and SMSF structures, non-standard income. A decade ago, ~7% of small businesses considered a non-bank lender. Today more than half plan to use one.
For talent, the appeal is concrete: leaner organisations, modern technology stacks, broader remits, faster decisions, and remuneration structures designed to compete head-on with the banks they're taking share from.
